Course Description: This quarter course will take a college-preparatory approach
to the study of American economics. It is designed to have students demonstrate
knowledge of basic economic concepts, economics systems, business organizations,
types of markets, demand, supply and price. Students will develop a practical
understanding of the importance of government, unions, and financial
institutions in determining growth and stability.
Prerequisite: English CP
Course Goals: As a result of taking this course, the student will:
1. Be able to discuss current issues in economics with family and peers.
2. Show mastery in important economic concepts essential to understanding the
United States’ economic system such as supply and demand, the determination of
price, and gross domestic product.
3. Calculate personal budgets and other real-life, hands-on tools to plan for
the future.
4. Understand the role of the government in the economy.
5. Develop an economic vocabulary in order to better discuss the economy with
others.
Classroom Guidelines:
1. Come to class prepared (notebook, pen/pencil, paper, folder, text,
assignments).
2. Treat everyone with respect (yourself, your classmates, and the teacher).
3. Be in your seat when the bell rings, and remain seated until the final bell
rings. I will dismiss you NOT the bell.
4. Stay awake and alert during the entire class period. Work on assignments only
from this course.
5. Follow all rules in the Student Discipline Code. This includes the fact that
cell phones and all other electronic devices are prohibited and are subject to
confiscation.
6. A student ID must be displayed at all times in accordance with school policy.
7. Have a positive attitude! It will lead you to a better life.
Rewards: Bonus points at the discretion of the teacher, a positive
note or phone call to parents, and verbal praise are possible rewards for good
behavior.
Consequences:
1. Warning to correct behavior
2. Student/Teacher Conference
3. Parent Contact
4. Teacher Detention
5. Guidance/SAVE Referral
6. Referral to the assistant principal
Grades: Your final grade in this course will be determined by the
following formula: Homework: 10%, Classwork: 25%, Quizzes (announced or
unannounced): 25%, Tests: 40%. In addition, there will be a final exam that
counts as 20% of the final grade as required by the school district.
Extra Credit: Extra Credit can be earned by going above and beyond
assignment requirements, and by volunteering for activities at the discretion of
the teacher. There will be no specific extra credit projects given. You are
advised to complete all assignments, quizzes, and tests in order to maintain an
acceptable grade in the course.
Late Work: When a student is absent, he or she will have five days to
make up the missing work. Points may be deducted for any work that is turned in
after that five day period. Late work is accepted for reduced credit according
to the following scale: 10% off per day, with a maximum of 30% off. All tests,
quizzes, and major projects must be completed by the end of the quarter, or the
student risks receiving an “I” in the course. The incomplete must be made up
with 30 days, or the “I” will transfer to an “F.”
Bathroom Policy: Students needing to use the facilities should do so at a
proper time. Proper times do not include during the warm-up, when I am lecturing
or giving instructions, or at the end of class. When you need to use the
restroom, you must do two things. First, fill out a hall pass in your agenda
book. Second, have me sign your agenda (it MUST be your own agenda, I will be
checking). Bathroom use is a privilege. If you abuse it, your privileges may be
revoked.
Parent Contact: Parent contact will be through telephone calls, letters,
interims, and report cards. Interims must be returned with a parent’s signature.
Parents can keep track of their students’ assignments by accessing E-chalk
(http://lhs.sumter2.org), my personal website (http://www.bonkoski.com), or by
calling the Homework Hotline (Call 506-2700, press “1” during the greeting, and
enter “4002” for my room number).
Attendance Policy: As stated in the Student Handbook, students who miss
more than 4 days in a quarter-course may not receive credit for the course. We
cover a lot of ground in this course. Please try to be here and contribute to
the class!
